Another Big Saturday is our termly initiative which sees us take about 130 members of St Paul's out and about across the city of Salisbury, decorating, painting and tidying for people in need of assistance.
The Big Saturday team source placements from agencies such as The Trussell Trust, Age Concern, and Alabare Christian Care Centres, and then place people in teams to serve on one Saturday per term.
To date, we have worked with elderly, disabled, house-bound, mentally ill, and generally over-stretched people around the Salisbury area.
It is a great thrill to see a healthy group of children and adults rolling up their sleeves, and making a real difference where it matters. But Another Big Saturday is so much more than the practical outcomes - it is also making connections and friendships with people; often people who find themselves quite isolated and alone.
We are inspired in our work by 1 John 3:18 which says, "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." For too long Christians have huddled together while negative stereotypes have informed people's perceptions of what Jesus' followers look and act like. Big Saturdays smash through these images to share God's love very practically with needy people, with no expectation other than satisfied people at the end of the day!
